Packers mock draft: Top needs addressed in three-round mock
Some might believe this is wishful thinking, but I think the chances of a top defensive talent like Minkah Fitzpatrick falling to No. 14 are high. I expect an early run on quarterbacks — four or even five passers could be off the board by the time the Packers pick. In this mock, Fitzpatrick is the top-tier talent that drops.
Green Bay’s secondary still needs a ton of work, particularly at cornerback. Fitzpatrick would be a great addition.
While Fitzpatrick may be listed as a safety, in reality he would line up all over the place in Mike Pettine’s defense. In Green Bay, he would spend plenty of time in the slot and as an outside corner, helping fix a position of need. No matter where Pettine used him, the 21-year-old would be a key piece in the secondary.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com ranked Fitzpatrick as the seventh best prospect in the entire class, second among defensive backs:
"“Fitzpatrick is an outstanding playmaker who possesses the versatility to play every position in the secondary. He primarily lined up as the nickel this past season, but he played cornerback as well as safety in previous campaigns.”"
There’s every chance Fitzpatrick is a top-eight pick. But with a potential rush for quarterbacks early on, as well as big names like Saquon Barkley, Quenton Nelson and Bradley Chubb expected to go inside the top-10, a top defensive talent could fall to Green Bay.
It could very well be Fitzpatrick, and that would be great news for the Packers.
