3. Will the focus be on defense at the top of the draft?

Logic would dictate that heavying up on the defensive side of the ball at the top of the draft could be in offing following a catastrophic 2016 that saw the Packers rank 26th overall in defense and give up a second-worst 30 touchdown passes to opposing teams.

That’s the model they followed in 2017, but the Packers have new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine this time around, which could provide them with a bit more confidence in his ability to coax better results from some of the same players on last year’s roster.

So, while Pettine will almost certainly exert some influence in advising the front office to select anywhere between five and eight defenders if they stand pat with all their picks, the odds say that Green Bay will invest in at least one offensive prospect within the first four rounds.

Another reason to buy into this line of thinking is the fact that the team must still beef up its tight end corps, considering that Richard Rodgers is now an Eagle along with the fact that Lance Kendricks is coming off a down season.

Jimmy Graham is a major upgrade over what they had, but the Packers are well aware that the former Seahawk is on the back nine of his career and will probably be in a green and gold uniform for no more than a year or two.

Taking a tight end in the early rounds remains a distinct possibility.
