Packers select CB Josh Jackson in the second round of the 2018 NFL Draft
The Green Bay Packers have selected cornerback Josh Jackson with their second-round selection in the 2018 NFL Draft.
Two days, two cornerbacks for the Green Bay Packers.
General manager Brian Gutekunst is committed to improving the secondary, and has now added Josh Jackson and Jaire Alexander to team with Kevin King, Tramon Williams and Davon House.
It was a surprise to see Jackson drop all the way to No. 45. He was a popular choice to Green Bay at No. 14 in mock drafts. This is excellent value.
Here is what Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote about Jackson in his draft profile:
"“Jackson’s draft stock likely took a hit with his average forty time and unimpressive work in position drills. However, he is armed with route anticipation, ball skills, and NFL length that teams covet in a press-man corner. It may take time, but the tools are there to be an early starter.”"
All of a sudden, the cornerback room looks much healthier. New defensive coordinator Mike Pettine has to be pleased with the additions made to the secondary, including Williams, who he coached in Cleveland.
This move follows a busy opening night for the Packers. Originally owning the 14th overall pick, they traded down 13 spots, receiving the New Orleans Saints’ 27th pick, as well as a fifth-rounder and a 2019 first-round selection.
But that wasn’t all. Green Bay then jumped back up, making a deal with Seattle for the 18th overall selection, which the Packers used to select cornerback Alexander.
The second round kicked off with offense. Three guards were selected with the first five picks of the evening.
The Denver Broncos picked wide receiver Courtland Sutton at No. 40, just five picks ahead of the Packers. He could have been an excellent addition to Green Bay’s offense.
Another potential target for Green Bay was edge rusher Harold Landry. It was a surprise Landry dropped all the way to the second round, but the Tennessee Titans traded up to get him at No. 41.
