Packers: Three questions facing Ty Montgomery in 2018
2. Will Montgomery earn a new contract?
Staying healthy will go a long way to earning a Montgomery a new contract. His rookie deal is up at the end of the 2018 season.
Currently, the Packers would be in a tough position. They wouldn’t want to watch a player this talented play for another team, but how much money can you give a player who has been unable to stay on the field? That’s what makes this season so important for Montgomery.
Working in his favor is that the Packers aren’t spending much cap room at the running back position. Aaron Jones, Jamaal Williams and Devante Mays are all on their rookie deals, and will still have two years remaining following the 2018 season.
This year will go a long way to determining what type of contract Montgomery will be offered by the Packers, and potentially other teams if he hits free agency. If he stays healthy and plays well, it’s far more likely Brian Gutekunst will offer him a three or four-year deal. But if he misses multiple games, Montgomery’s best option could be to sign a one-year “prove it” deal with a team.
Time will tell. This season is a big one for Montgomery. It will determine what kind of contract he’ll receive next offseason.
