7. Drafting three wide receivers

The move: With a need at wide receiver, the Packers used three of their draft picks on the final day to add depth at the position. They selected J’Mon Moore, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown.

Analysis: This approach worked at running back last year. After letting Eddie Lacy and James Starks walk in free agency, the Packers used three of their final-day selections on Jamaal Williams, Aaron Jones and Devante Mays.

Brian Gutekunst took on a similar approach to his predecessor at the wide receiver position this year. And each of the new pass catchers come to Green Bay with potential.

Moore has been compared to Davante Adams on a number of occasions. Valdes-Scantling has the size (6-foot-4, 206 pounds) and speed (ran a 4.37 40-yard dash at the combine, second-fastest among wide receivers). St. Brown was great value in the sixth round. He was projected to be selected much higher.

Between the three of them, the Packers will be hoping at least one develops into a quality starter. In the short term, they’ve added depth and competition, which is never a bad thing. There are limited spots available on the 53-man roster. It’s possible all three of these rookies make the team.

But the fact there is competition is good news for the Packers.
