5. Bringing back Tramon Williams

The move: The Packers signed cornerback Tramon Williams to a two-year, $10 million contract in March. Williams spent eight years with the Packers, before leaving in 2015 via free agency. He has since spent two seasons with the Cleveland Browns, and one with the Arizona Cardinals.

Analysis: Green Bay desperately needed to add more talent at cornerback this offseason. After missing out on some of the top free agent corners like Malcolm Butler and Trumaine Johnson — who signed huge deals with the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets respectively — Gutekunst turned to the experienced Williams.

Williams played well in Arizona last year, proving that age is just a number. Mark Chichester of Pro Football Focus agreed:

"“The veteran cornerback allowed just 31 receptions from 63 targets last year and added eight pass breakups while doing so. All told, he allowed a passer rating of just 58.4 on throws into his coverage, which was the sixth-lowest mark among the 81 cornerbacks with at least 50 targets.”"

Williams also adds experience to a young secondary. Without safety Morgan Burnett — who joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency — the Packers needed a leader in the defensive backfield. That’s where Williams can come in.

This was a smart signing by Gutekunst, as it helped address the team’s biggest need, while also ensuring they won’t be relying solely on rookies at the position.
