The Starter: Ty Montgomery

Montgomery has yet to find a position to call “home” in the NFL. However, after converting to running back from receiver following the 2016 season, he may very well be on his way. As you can imagine, Montgomery is still learning the position. But, when he has been on the field, and that is a big “but”, Montgomery has been this team’s best running back.

The former Stanford Cardinal just seems to have a knack for making big plays. He uses his strong lower body to run through the arm tackles of defenders, proving very difficult to bring down. As I have mentioned a couple times now, Montgomery was drafted as and played as a receiver for his first two NFL seasons. He is able to use his exceptional acceleration skills from playing that position and translate them well to the running back one.

Since his time at Stanford, Montgomery has played all over the place. Currently, this team’s only true kick returner on the roster would have to be Trevor Davis. However, I could very easily see Montgomery stealing some reps at the position in an effort to just get the ball in his hands.

Coaches have been raving about Montgomery ever since he made the transition to the running back position in 2017. They have even hinted that Montgomery is the most dynamic player of the group and will get the most touches, if healthy. Touches, however, is definitely a pliable term. This could refer to kick returns or lining up in either the backfield or as a receiver. The most likely solution is trotting out Montgomery with another one of the running backs in a “two running back” set and creating a whirlwind of scenarios for opposing defenses.
