CB Davon House

Yes, Davon House was technically signed as a free agent in April. Yes, he was a starter for the majority of the 2017 season. And yes, he is an ideal fit in new defensive coordinator Mike Pettine’s scheme. However, none of the aforementioned will make House a lock when roster cuts come around.

Draft selections Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson are surely locks for this roster. The same can be said for 35-year-old Tramon Williams. That leaves two or three more spots for corners. It will be interesting to see if Quinten Rollins will continue to be given opportunities after struggling last year. Lenzy Pipkins was able to take advantage of limited playing time in 2017 and catch the eyes of the coaching staff and fans.

In my humble opinion, the dark horse candidate to make the final roster is wide receiver converted to corner, Herb Waters. After spending his two first two seasons on the practice squad and dealing with injuries, Waters will look to push for that last roster spot. Preliminary reports out of minicamp and OTAs were that Waters looked impressive.

The key to the Packers being comfortable cutting House is the development of the young talent. If rookie Josh Jackson keeps improving, he might be able to push House for snaps. House will not provide much value on special teams. Likely, his only role on this team would be as an outside cornerback; a veteran depth fill. However, if the young players continue to struggle in training camp, the team may be less inclined to cut House.
