Green Bay Packers: Top 5 training camp position battles
4. EDGE
Here’s what we know already: Clay Matthews and Nick Perry are the Packers’ top two edge rushers.
But behind them on the depth chart is where the conversation begins. The depth at outside linebacker is somewhat of a concern, especially given Matthews and Perry’s injury history. Over the next month or so, we’ll learn a lot about the Packers’ young edge rushers.
Can Vince Biegel, a fourth-round pick last year who missed half of his rookie season due to injury, step up and become a key contributor on defense? How about Reggie Gilbert, who played well when given an opportunity at the end of the 2017 season?
It’s still possible the Packers add another edge rusher in free agency, but there aren’t too many great options out there. Any signing now would be for depth.
For the Packers’ edge rushers to reach the next level, the team will need some of the young players to step up. Biegel and Gilbert will be a part of that. So will Kyler Fackrell, who hasn’t lived up to his third-round selection yet.
We’ll get our first real glimpse of the Packers’ edge rushers working in Mike Pettine’s defense at training camp. There will be a lot of competition for snaps behind Matthews and Perry.
