Packers: Mike McCarthy at No. 7 in Bleacher Report coach rankings
Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers came in at No. 7 in Bleacher Report’s rankings of each coaching staff in the NFL.
McCarthy has been given his share of criticism by Green Bay Packers fans over the years. Some of it is fair, some of it not so much.
But under his leadership, the Packers have been a successful team, making the playoffs nine times in 12 years. He won the Super Bowl in 2010, and has helped the team reach the NFC Championship Game on four occasions.
Brad Gagnon of Bleacher Report ranked each coaching staff heading into the new season, and he had the Packers at No. 7:
"“Among active head coaches, only Bill Belichick and Mike Tomlin have better records than McCarthy, who was a star offensive coordinator in New Orleans before starting this successful run with the Packers in which he has run a top-10 offense in nine of his 12 seasons. He also has 10 playoff wins and a Super Bowl on his record.”"
McCarthy has made some changes to his coaching staff this offseason.
He moved on from longtime defensive coordinator Dom Capers, replacing him with Mike Pettine. McCarthy also brought back Joe Philbin as the offensive coordinator.
Pettine’s arrival has brought a lot of optimism to Green Bay. After years of disappointing play on defense, fans are hoping Pettine can help turn things around. The signings made by new general manager Brian Gutekunst will also play an important part in that, of course.
However, if the Packers miss out on the Super Bowl again in the next couple of years, pressure could begin to build on McCarthy. Green Bay has the best quarterback in football, but has now failed to reach the Super Bowl for seven consecutive seasons.
Of course, it’s not easy to make the Super Bowl. Sometimes the difference between winning a championship and falling just short can be something simple, like, let’s say, an onside kick.
