Safeties (5)

Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Josh Jones, Kentrell Brice, Marwin Evans, Jermaine Whitehead

Without Morgan Burnett, who signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers in free agency earlier this offseason, Ha Ha Clinton-Dix takes over as the leader at safety. He’s also the most experienced player at the position.

Kentrell Brice was in contention to start alongside Clinton-Dix, but an ankle injury suffered during Monday’s practice puts that in doubt. Brice appears to have avoided a season-ending injury; according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, X-rays for a break came back negative, which is encouraging news. And Brice was able to watch from the sidelines during Tuesday’s practice, according to Mike Spofford of Packers.com.

But for now, it’s unclear when Brice will be able to return. This opens up an opportunity for second-year Josh Jones to earn a starting job alongside Clinton-Dix.

The Packers lack experience behind Clinton-Dix, and it’s possible the team could look to sign a free agent safety in the near future, particularly if Brice is going to be out of action for a while. General manager Brian Gutekunst is yet to make a move, but there are a few very good safeties still on the market, one being former Pro Bowler Eric Reid.

When fully healthy, the Packers are in good shape at safety. But the lack of depth, particularly now that Brice is injured, is somewhat concerning.
