Ty Montgomery injured his foot in the Green Bay Packers’ preseason loss to the Oakland Raiders, which could leave the team thin at running back to start the season.

Injuries were a problem for the Green Bay Packers at running back throughout the 2017 season. Early on this year, the same is true again. And it could leave them thin at the position in the regular season opener.

Second-year Aaron Jones made his preseason debut on Friday night after a hamstring injury kept him out of the opening two games. The good news is he’s healthy, the bad news is that he won’t be available for the opening two regular season contests due to suspension.

Jamaal Williams, who is the frontrunner (excuse the pun) to start at running back this season, has been dealing with an ankle injury. Third-string Devante Mays has been out a while with a hamstring issue.

And now Ty Montgomery is injured.

Montgomery left Friday’s game with a foot injury. The good news is that it appears he may have avoided a serious injury, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Time will tell whether it keeps Montgomery out of the regular season opener in just over two weeks.

With Jones out for the opening two games, the Packers need Williams and Montgomery to be healthy.

Each of Green Bay’s top three running backs dealt with injuries last year. It could be why head coach Mike McCarthy spoke about taking on a running back-by-committee approach this season.

In the past couple of weeks, the Packers’ top four running backs from last year have been dealing with injuries.

When everyone is healthy, Green Bay arguably has one of the deepest groups of running backs in the entire league. Williams, Montgomery and Jones all bring different skill sets to the Packers’ offense, and are all valuable to the team.

But injuries were a problem last year, and they have been again this summer.

Hopefully Montgomery’s injury isn’t too serious, and he’ll be ready to go in the season opener along with Williams.
