Quarterback

As strange as it sounds, it’s actually smart to avoid Aaron Rodgers in fantasy drafts. Any quarterback early on, for that matter. It’s not about talent, rather the high draft pick you’d likely need to spend to get Rodgers.

According to Fantasy Football Calculator, in 12-team leagues, Rodgers’ average draft position (ADP) has him being selected with the final pick of the third round. That’s right. The third round. That’s an extremely high price to pay for a quarterback in fantasy. Especially given the depth at the position this year.

In the same part of the draft, you could instead select a running back like Lamar Miller or Kenyan Drake, or a wide receiver like Josh Gordon or Larry Fitzgerald. It’s much easier to find a quarterback in the later rounds than it is a running back or receiver.

In contrast, last year’s MVP candidate Carson Wentz is typically going around the eighth round according to his ADP. Philip Rivers is going as late as the 10th round. There is a lot more value in waiting until the later rounds before drafting a quarterback than giving up a top pick for Rodgers, no matter how great he is.

If Rodgers is somehow still on the board in the sixth round, only then is it worth considering. While it would still be high for a quarterback, it’d be much better value to land the favorite to lead QBs in fantasy points in the sixth than earlier on.

But in all likelihood, one team in your league will overpay for Rodgers. Let someone else be that team.
