After an impressive preseason, Brett Hundley deserves a spot on the Green Bay Packers’ 53-man roster.

When the Packers traded for DeShone Kizer earlier this offseason, it certainly seemed like the plan was to move on from Hundley as the primary backup to Aaron Rodgers.

Hundley struggled as the starter last year while Rodgers was out with a broken collarbone. He threw just nine touchdowns all season with 12 interceptions. The Packers were shutout twice at home.

But Hundley has put that behind him. He looks a much improved player entering his fourth year with the team, and his performances in preseason should win him the backup job to start the season.

Hundley has been the team’s best quarterback throughout preseason. Kizer has played well too, but Hundley has been excellent.

In three games, Hundley has completed 23 of 37 pass attempts (62.2 percent) for 263 yards and a touchdown with one interception. He would have had another touchdown pass against the Raiders had Lance Kendricks caught the ball in the end zone. Hundley did his part of the job perfectly.

It’s hard to imagine the Packers would cut Kizer just months after trading away a starting cornerback to get him. But right now, Kizer should be the third choice at quarterback behind Rodgers and Hundley.

That could change. Kizer is young, has shown he has potential in preseason and could be the long-term number two.

The Packers don’t tend to keep three quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, but they have done so a couple of times in recent years. Back in 2014, the season after Rodgers last broke his collarbone, the team kept three quarterbacks: Rodgers, Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien.

In Hundley’s rookie year in 2015, the Packers kept three again: Rodgers, Tolzien and Hundley.

They may do the same again this season.

Kizer’s arrival added much-needed competition at quarterback. It appears to have worked. Hundley has shown a number of improvements from last season. He’ll need to prove it in the regular season if he is needed, but so far this summer, so good.

It’s not an easy decision to keep three quarterbacks as it means having one less player at another position, but Hundley’s play this summer should force the Packers to keep three QBs on their 53-man roster.
