Five observations about the Green Bay Packers’ initial 53-man roster.
The preseason came to a close and the Green Bay Packers have turned their attention to crafting their 53-man roster. There were some surprise cuts and a few head scratching decisions made by the Packers.
During the course of the season, the bottom third of the roster is a revolving door. Injuries and inefficient play keep the roster turnover going on a week-by-week basis throughout the season. There’s little doubt in my mind that the roster, as we see it now, won’t be the same roster the Packers open up with next Sunday.
The initial roster has left the Packers short on depth at some key positions while having more than enough at others. In all, four undrafted free agents made the initial roster while GM Brian Gutekunst waived two of his draft picks.
Gutekunst also removed some players from former GM Ted Thompson’s final draft classes. Some of which may have been overdue.
With depth a question at two positions (at least), there’s reason to believe there will be a few additions to the roster that were not on the Packers during the preseason. Adding a free agent or two should be expected. Also, a trade shouldn’t be ruled out, especially at the wide receiver position.
With that in mind, here are five observations about the Packers’ initial 53-man roster.
