Packers signing linebacker Korey Toomer, per report
The Green Bay Packers have added more depth at inside linebacker, reportedly signing Korey Toomer.
It’s been a busy morning for the Green Bay Packers.
General manager Brian Gutekunst was expected to make changes to the 53-man roster this week, and he’s made some moves already.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Packers have signed linebacker Korey Toomer and waived cornerback Herb Waters.
According to Rapoport, the Packers also placed wide receiver Jake Kumerow on injured reserve.
Green Bay desperately needed depth at linebacker.
With starter Jake Ryan out for the season due to a knee injury, and rookie Oren Burks likely out for the season opener, the team needed to make a signing. The Packers have already added former Colts linebacker Antonio Morrison via a trade, but they made the surprising decision to cut Ahmad Thomas on Saturday.
Toomer has played in 45 games since being drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. He was with the Chargers for the past two seasons.
It will be interesting to see how defensive coordinator Mike Pettine plans to use the two newest linebackers on the roster, Toomer and Morrison, this year.
Don’t be surprised if the Packers look for more depth at outside linebacker this week after only keeping four on the 53-man roster. Gutekunst made the bold decision to cut last year’s fourth-round pick Vince Biegel, who struggled in preseason.
On the outside, Green Bay has Clay Matthews, Nick Perry, Reggie Gilbert and Kyler Fackrell. That’s it.
Green Bay will also likely be in the market for another running back after keeping just two — second-year Jamaal Williams and Ty Montgomery — on the roster.
Lombardi Ave’s Jesse Fry wrote about a couple of running backs the team could potentially sign in his five observations about the 53-man roster article.
What are your thoughts on the Packers’ decision to sign Toomer, waive Waters and place Kumerow on injured reserve?
