Packers: Undefeated Rams are the toughest test yet
This week the Green Bay Packers will attempt to do something no team has been able to this season: defeat the Los Angeles Rams.
Following their 39-10 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 7, the Rams remain the only undefeated team in the NFL.
And now the Packers, who with a 3-2-1 record have been inconsistent so far this season, will have to put together their best performance of the year to have a chance.
Two weeks after giving up 174 rushing yards to the 49ers, including 87 on 12 attempts to Raheem Mostert, the Packers will now have to try and slow down Todd Gurley.
In seven games, Gurley 144 carries for 686 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has 270 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
To have a chance of winning this game, the Packers are going to have to be at their best on offense. Aaron Rodgers will need to play at an MVP level (see, second half against Chicago). The offense must put together its first complete performance of the year.
And even that might not be enough.
Kirk Cousins threw for 422 yards and three touchdowns and no interceptions against the Rams in Week 4. The Vikings had two receivers with over 100 yards. They put up 31 points on the road.
But the Rams still won by a touchdown.
Green Bay’s defense is going to struggle in this game. But if Mike Pettine’s unit can force a turnover, or somehow limit Los Angeles to a couple of field goals, it can give the offense a chance.
The Packers won’t be expected to win this game. A loss certainly wouldn’t end their season.
But if they have any hopes of winning a championship this season, they best find a way to keep up with the NFC’s premier team.
An advantage for the Packers is that they’ve had an extra week to prepare for this game. Mike McCarthy has had an opportunity to review the first half of the season and make much-needed adjustments.
Next Sunday, we’ll learn a lot about the 2018 Green Bay Packers.
