Packers secondary could be at full strength in Week 8 vs. Rams
The Green Bay Packers’ secondary could be at full strength Week 8 against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Packers invested two high draft picks at the cornerback position in the spring, but have been without first-rounder Jaire Alexander for the past couple of games.
Alexander could return this week against the LA Rams, which would be great news for Green Bay’s defensive backfield.
But they could also be joined by Bashaud Breeland for the first time.
The Packers signed Breeland back in September after Davon House went on injured reserve, but the former fourth-round pick has been out with a hamstring injury.
Alexander and Breeland have been limited in practice so far this week, according to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, but it’s looking good for both playing on Sunday.
All of a sudden the Packers look strong at cornerback.
When fully healthy, they will have Alexander, Breeland, Kevin King, Josh Jackson and Tramon Williams all active.
They will all need to play well up against the Rams’ dominant offense this week.
Los Angeles could be without wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who has five touchdowns in six games this season, but Robert Woods and Brandin Cooks will make life difficult for the Packers secondary.
Woods is ninth in the league for receiving yards this season with 602, and he also has three touchdowns. Cooks is 12th in receiving yards with 569 and has found the end zone twice. Cooks is averaging an impressive 17.8 yards per reception, sixth-best in the NFL.
Stopping Todd Gurley might be the Packers’ top priority on defense this week, but the secondary will have a big role to play against a Rams offense averaging 293 yards per game through the air and a league-high 9.7 yards per pass.
Getting Alexander and Breeland back for Sunday’s game would be great news for Mike Pettine’s defense.
