Packers: Ty Montgomery traded to Ravens, per report
Ty Montgomery is on his way to the Baltimore Ravens.
The Green Bay Packers have made a trade just ahead of the deadline.
According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Packers have traded running back Ty Montgomery to the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for a seventh-round pick in 2020.
Considering he was traded for only a future seventh-round pick, one has to assume the Packers were planning on moving on regardless.
Montgomery was originally drafted by the Packers as a wide receiver and returner.
But after missing 10 games in his rookie year due to injury, the Packers made a decision midway through the 2016 season to move him to running back after Eddie Lacy and James Starks went down with injuries.
The move was a good one. Montgomery was the team’s lead back for the remainder of the season; he finished 2016 with 77 carries for 457 yards and three touchdowns, averaging 5.9 yards per carry.
But injuries continued to be a problem for the wide receiver-turned-running back. He missed half of the 2017 season due to injury, and as a result only had a limited role on offense this year behind Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams on the depth chart.
Montgomery has been unable to secure a featured role in Green Bay’s offense as either a running back or wide receiver.
His decision to take the ball out of the end zone in Sunday’s loss to the Rams, which led to a fumble which effectively ended the game, led to criticism and potentially some issues with teammates in the locker room, as noted by Ryan Wood of the Green Bay Press-Gazette:
Montgomery is a talented player who will be a good addition to the Ravens offense. It’s a shame it didn’t work out in Green Bay and that his final play was a costly fumble, but he has the opportunity to become an important player for the Ravens right away.
The Packers add a late-round draft pick in 2020.
Good luck and thank you, Ty Montgomery!
