Geronimo Allison’s injury creates an opportunity for rookie wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling in the Green Bay Packers offense.

On Tuesday, the Packers placed Allison on injured reserve due to a groin injury, according to Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

This is bad news for the Packers, as Allison had stepped up into a bigger role on offense when healthy this year. Allison has Aaron Rodgers‘ trust, which is so important.

What this means is there will be more opportunities for Marquez Valdes-Scantling, by far the standout of the team’s trio of draft picks at the wide receiver position.

MVS has the combination of size, speed and athleticism, and he’s making the most of his opportunities so far.

The rookie pass catcher had to wait a few weeks into the season before getting his first real chance to make an impression, but he has forced the Packers to get him more involved.

MVS has 17 catches for 358 yards and two touchdowns this season, averaging an impressive 21.1 yards per catch. Only Tampa Bay’s DeSean Jackson (22.4 yards per catch) has a better average.

Valdes-Scantling’s speed makes him a tough cover, and he gives the Packers offense something it has lacked for a number of years. He’s getting open deep down the field, and it’s making a difference.

Equanimeous St. Brown will also have the opportunity to earn more snaps. Could we also see more from fourth-round pick J’Mon Moore?

Right now, MVS has been by far the top performer of the rookie receivers, and he might now be the second best receiver on the team behind Davante Adams.

What this means for Allison

Geronimo Allison‘s season isn’t officially over. He will miss the next eight weeks but would be eligible to return from injured reserve after that.

Allison will be a restricted free agent in the offseason, so there’s a strong chance he’ll be back in Green Bay in 2019.
