Top five performers for Packers in Week 9 loss vs. Patriots
By Jesse Fry
2. Marquez Valdes-Scantling
For the second week in a row, MVS found himself on the receiving end of another Aaron Rodgers bomb. With the Patriots lined up in man coverage and looked to be blitzing, MVS beat his man off the snap and used his speed to create separation and haul in a 51-yard bomb.
What may have been even more impressive was MVS’ catch on third-and-one late in the third quarter. With the Packers facing a critical third down, the call was made for Rodgers to roll out to his right and make an easy play to one of the receivers on that side of the field.
With defenders plastered to their men, MVS broke up field. Rodgers’ throw was short but MVS made the adjustment and made a tough contested catch for the first down.
MVS finished the game with 101 yards on three catches. While three catches is not a large total, the 101 yards is. MVS is proving to be the deep threat the Packers have been lacking and a solid number three receiver.
With the announcement Geronimo Allison being placed on injured reserve, MVS will have to keep up his solid play while continuing to develop.
When the season started, the most the Packers probably hoped for was a solid season in the return game with a few plays made from scrimmage. That Valdes-Scantling has become the solid player he has been is a testament to him.
When criticized in training camp, MVS let his play do the talking and gave a preseason performance worth mentioning. Since then he has grown every week and is now a bonafide play-maker for the Packers.
With the injury to Allison, MVS will now have an even larger role in the offense and even more opportunity to shine.
