Immediate reactions to Packers’ frustrating loss at Seattle
Immediate reactions to the Green Bay Packers’ loss to the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.
The Seattle Seahawks upended the Packers by a score of 27-24 in a maddening game on Thursday night.
Here’s some immediate reactions:
Aaron Rodgers despises throwing checkdown passes. He will do it only after escaping the pocket, examining the entire field, and having a pass rusher close in on him.
Mike McCarthy, Joe Philbin, and Frank Cignetti Jr. are clearly incapable of coaching #12 out of this bad habit. With that in mind, can we please keep the back in as an additional blocker on third down, rather than leaking him out to be ignored?
Similarly, the coaching staff simply needs to get into Rodgers’ head that timeouts are precious commodities and coach him into never being forced to waste them.
The Seahawks’ run defense was surprisingly stout. Still, it’s infuriating to see the offense’s refusal to run the ball on first or third down.
Josh Jackson doesn’t have the speed to stay with fast receivers in man-to-man coverage on crossing routes. He needs to be on the sidelines, where he can use the boundary as an extra defender.
I agreed with the decision to kick the (missed) field goal at the beginning of the game. Pretty cowardly to not go for it on fourth down at the end.
In order, the ludicrously overturned call on the drop against Tony Brown, the uncalled defensive pass interference when Davante Adams got hit in the face, and the phantom holding call on Trevor Davis‘ kick return all made a huge impact on this game.
Equanimeous St. Brown is a great talent and should be a good receiver one day, but he and Rodgers are on such different pages right now.
Josh Jones looked a bit hesitant tonight. He doesn’t seem comfortable playing in space.
Antonio Morrison, on the other hand, has no qualms with running full-speed into any situation.
Rodgers continues to under-throw his receivers a few times each game. It’s unclear if this is an issue of not setting his feet, or if he simply is underestimating their speed.
All that said, Rodgers played a good game, and he should have been enough to win.
Obviously, outstanding games from Kyler Fackrell and Davante Adams.
Jaire Alexander was seldom targeted. Pretty clear that the Seahawks identified Brown, Jackson, and the other defensive backs as the ones to attack.
Pretty weird how Marquez Valdes-Scantling got so few opportunities.
Rodgers and McCarthy both need to stop trying to hit so many home runs on third-and-short to medium.
Injuries have decimated this defense.
Hunter Bradley has not been up to par.
After a remarkable preseason, Reggie Gilbert has disappeared.
Aaron Jones was really, really good in the passing game tonight.
Mike McCarthy is probably one regular season loss away from being fired.
