2. Free up cap room

The Packers are paying a lot of money to a number of players who aren’t playing well enough. It could be time for general manager Brian Gutekunst some big moves to free up cap room.

According to Spotrac, the Packers will have approximately $41.95 million in cap room in 2019.

First, Gutekunst could decide to move on from a number of the team’s veterans who are set to hit free agency. Randall Cobb, Clay Matthews, Muhammad Wilkerson and Lance Kendricks are all free agents next offseason, and it’s no guarantee the Packers re-sign any of them.

Could Gutekunst also decide to move on from Nick Perry? Perry only signed a new five-year deal in 2017, but to say he’s been disappointing this season would be an understatement.

Perry has never played a full season and was placed on injured reserve after nine games this year. He posted just 1.5 sacks.

Cutting Perry in the offseason would only free up $3.6 million in cap space and he would still account for $11.1 million in cap room in 2019, according to Spotrac. But it’s still a move Gutekunst could decide to make, forcing the team to improve at the position.

The Packers could save over $21 million if they decide to move on from Perry, Jimmy Graham, Bryan Bulaga, Tramon Williams and Jason Spriggs.

That’s not to say Gutekunst should release all of those players, but he should look to make big changes to the roster, and that begins by freeing up cap room.
