Three moves the Packers must make this offseason
3. Be aggressive in free agency
You free up cap room for a reason, and that’s to bring in new players to the team. Brian Gutekunst has an excellent opportunity to make big changes in his second season as GM.
The Packers own two first-round picks in the draft next spring, but they should also be more active in free agency. Gutekunst has already shown he’s more willing to be aggressive than predecessor Ted Thompson, and that should continue.
The Chicago Bears have shown what a difference one offseason can make. GM Ryan Pace made a change at head coach, traded for Khalil Mack and also made some big free agency signings such as Allen Robinson and Trey Burton.
I’d love to see Gutekunst make a move for DeMarcus Lawrence, if he hits free agency. Lawrence is just 26-years-old and has 32 sacks and seven forced fumbles for the Cowboys over the past four seasons. Lawrence would be a huge addition to Mike Pettine’s defense.
If the team moves on from Bryan Bulaga, maybe Gutekunst would go after one of the top offensive linemen in free agency.
It’s tough to know for sure this early who will be available and who will be extended, but there will be multiple opportunities in both free agency, the draft and via trades for Gutekunst to upgrade this roster.
The Packers already have stars at key positions. They have an MVP quarterback, an elite wide receiver, an All-Pro left tackle, a young star at running back and plenty of young talent on defense with the likes of Jaire Alexander, Kenny Clark and Blake Martinez continuing to improve.
If Gutekunst can add the right pieces in the offseason, the Green Bay Packers will be in a much stronger position in 2019.
