The Joe Philbin era is off to a good start.

The Green Bay Packers were much improved in their 34-20 victory over the Atlanta Falcons at Lambeau Field, which barely keeps their playoffs alive mathematically, even if it’s highly unlikely.

It was far from a perfect game by the Packers, but it was a much improved performance on both sides of the ball.

Aaron Rodgers threw for 196 yards and two touchdowns, one to Davante Adams and one to Randall Cobb. Adams continued his excellent season with 81 yards to go with his score.

Despite dealing with a number of injuries along the offensive line, the offense was in more rhythm than we’ve seen for much of the season.

Rodgers was getting the ball out quicker, and the play clock wasn’t drained all the way to zero before every play. Everything looked smoother, and they converted seven of 13 third downs, much improved from last week’s performance against the Cardinals.

The defense played its part, too.

After the Falcons put up a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive on their opening possession, which included two completions to Julio Jones that Joe Philbin unsuccessfully challenged, the Packers defense bounced back.

Mike Pettine’s unit held Atlanta to just 13 more points after that, and also came away with two turnovers including a pick-six by Bashaud Breeland.

So what does this win mean for the Packers?

Well it just about keeps them in playoff contention. While still unlikely they win out, three more wins could be enough with some help around the league.

Three teams ahead of Green Bay in the standings — Carolina, Washington and Tampa Bay — all lost. If Dallas defeats Philadelphia and Seattle wins against Minnesota, the Packers would move within just one game of the wild-card spots, although the Vikings do hold the tiebreaker.

This win didn’t do much for the Packers’ hopes of a higher draft pick, but it just about keeps their playoff hopes alive. For now.
