Green Bay Packers: 15 greatest pass rushers of all-time
By John Buhler
Best pass rushers in Green Bay Packers history: 5. Tim Harris
- First-Team All-Pro (1989)
- Second-Team All-Pro (1988)
- Pro Bowl (1989)
- 55.0 career quarterback sacks w/Packers
- 5x Packers season leader in quarterback sacks (1986-90)
- 2x 10+ quarterback sack seasons w/Packers (1988-89)
Tim Harris’ 10-year NFL career was primarily split between the Packers and the San Francisco 49ers. Though he won a Super Bowl as a member of the 49ers in his second stint with San Francisco in 1994 over the then-San Diego Chargers, Harris really refined his pass-rushing prowess during his first five years with Green Bay.
Harris was a former fourth-round pick by the Packers out of Memphis in the 1986 NFL Draft. Right out of the gate, Harris proved he had an elite knack for driving the opposing quarterback into the turf with 8.0 quarterback sacks in 1986. This would be the first of five-straight seasons that he led the Packers in sacks.
Since Harris only played with the Packers from 1986 to 1990 and led the team in sacks each year, his 55.0 career sacks with Green Bay were easily the most over that time frame for the team. Though his first two years in the league were great, his next two in 1988 and 1989 were outstanding.
Harris was named Second-Team All-Pro in 1988, as he recorded double-digit quarterback sacks for the first time in his career with 13.5. While he didn’t make the Pro Bowl that fall, he did lead the league with two safeties.
In 1989, Harris left nothing to doubt. He had his best year of his professional career with a ridiculous 19.5 quarterback sacks. Harris made his only trip to the Pro Bowl and earned a spot on the All-Pro First-Team. This Packers team went 10-6, which was the best team Green Bay had since 1972.
Harris left the Packers after the 1990 NFL season to play for the 49ers. He had 17.0 quarterback sacks playing for the 1992 49ers, a team that lost in the NFC Championship to the eventual Super Bowl champion Dallas Cowboys. Harris would play with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1993 before finally hoisting the Lombardi in 1994 with the 49ers’ win over the Chargers.
