Green Bay Packers: 15 greatest pass rushers of all-time
By John Buhler
Best pass rushers in Green Bay Packers history: 9. Tony Bennett
- 36.0 career quarterback sacks w/Packers
- 2x Packers season leader in quarterback sacks (1991-92)
- 2x 10+ quarterback sack seasons w/Packers (1991-92)
- 251 career combined tackles w/Packers
Tony Bennett would be a first-round pick by the Packers in the 1990 NFL Draft out of Ole Miss. Though he only spent half of his eight-year NFL career in Green Bay, Bennett sure did leave his mark as one of the greatest pass rushers in Packers franchise history.
While he was never a Pro Bowler in Green Bay, or with the Indianapolis Colts for that matter, Bennett was a highly productive player coming off the edge for the Packers in the early 1990s. Twice did he lead the Packers in quarterback sacks. Both of those seasons resulted in him driving the opposing quarterback into the turf over 10 times.
After just a 3.0-sack campaign in 1990, Bennett backed that up with a stellar 13.0 in 1991. He forced three fumbles that season and achieved a career high in combined tackles with 111. Bennett would somehow build on that breakout sophomore campaign of his in 1992.
That fall saw the Green Bay outside linebacker record a career-best 13.5 quarterback sacks. He had 91 combined tackles and set career highs in forced fumbles with four and fumble recoveries with three. Keep in mind he was doing all this years before Reggie White came to Green Bay in 1993 NFL free agency.
After just a 6.5-sack season in 1993, Bennett would move on to the Colts in 1994, where he would spend his final four NFL seasons. In Indianapolis, Bennett had 28.5 career quarterback sacks, including a 10.5 campaign in 1995 that saw the Colts make it all the way to the AFC Championship.
However, Bennett’s best years did mostly come with the Packers. He finished with 251 career combined tackles in Green Bay, as well as 36.0 career quarterback sacks with the Packers. His pass-rushing prowess has him cracking the top-10, but had he played with Green Bay longer, Bennett would definitely be higher up on this all-time list.
