Packers find safety in latest FanSided 2019 mock draft
The Green Bay Packers address both the defense and offense in the latest FanSided mock draft.
The Green Bay Packers have two first-round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft, which gives general manager Brian Gutekunst plenty of options on the opening night.
Brad Weiss of FanSided has the team adding talent on both sides of the ball in his latest mock draft.
With the 12th overall pick, Weiss has the Packers selecting Alabama safety Deionte Thompson:
“The safety could come in and fill the void left by the trade of Ha Ha Clinton-Dix during the 2018 season, and if the Packers hope to be a player in the NFC, this defensive backfield has got to improve,” Weiss wrote about the selection.
And he’s absolutely right. Green Bay had high expectations for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix in 2018, but he was traded away before the deadline. The secondary has a lot of young talent, particularly at cornerback, but addressing the safety position is a priority for Brian Gutekunst this offseason.
Thompson, who is ranked 18th among all prospects and first among safeties by CBS Sports, could be a great addition to Mike Pettine’s defense.
Wide receiver could also be a priority for Green Bay this offseason, and Weiss has the Packers using the 32nd overall pick (from New Orleans) on NC State receiver Kelvin Harmon.
Randall Cobb is a free agent this offseason, so finding another receiver could be a top priority for the Packers in the first few rounds. With Harmon, the wide receiver corps would have a lot of potential.
Assuming Geronimo Allison is back in 2019, the Packers offense would have plenty of depth at the position with Davante Adams, Allison, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Equanimeous St. Brown and Harmon.
Brian Gutekunst will have options in the opening round. He may decide to select one of the draft’s top edge rushers, or focus on offense by selecting an offensive lineman or tight end early on.
