Packers: Jaire Alexander makes Gil Brandt’s 2018 All-Rookie Team
Green Bay Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander has been named to Gil Brandt’s 2018 All-Rookie Team.
The Green Bay Packers desperately needed help at the cornerback position last offseason, and Brian Gutekunst looks to have hit a home run with his first draft pick as general manager.
Jaire Alexander put together an excellent rookie season, and NFL media senior analyst Gil Brandt has included the Packers cornerback in his 2018 All-Rookie Team.
Alexander is joined by Cleveland Browns first-round pick Denzel Ward as the two cornerbacks on the team.
Los Angeles Chargers safety Derwin James, who Green Bay passed up when it was on the clock originally with the 14th overall pick, and edge rusher Marcus Davenport, who the New Orleans Saints traded up with Green Bay to select at No. 14, also made the team.
Alexander has also been named to the PFWA All-Rookie Team and Pro Football Focus All-Rookie Team for his impressive debut season in Green Bay.
Alexander led the Packers in passes defended with 11, was second on the team in tackles with 66 and was also tied for third in interceptions with one.
It will be exciting to see Alexander improve over the next couple of seasons. He has the potential to become a star at cornerback, which would be key to another Super Bowl run. It also helps that there is some continuity at defensive coordinator with Mike Pettine keeping his role on the coaching staff.
The secondary still needs work this offseason. Bashaud Breeland is a free agent; Gutekunst should do everything he can to re-sign him. The Packers will also be hoping second-round pick Josh Jackson can make the second-year jump after an up-and-down rookie season.
But if Alexander continues to play at a high level, Breeland re-signs and Kevin King can stay healthy, the Packers will have a strong starting point at cornerback in 2019.
