Green Bay Packers 2019 offseason review: Wide receiver
Will the Green Bay Packers bring back Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison in 2019?
A new head coach and offense brings some uncertainty to the wide receiver position. Does Matt LaFleur think the Green Bay Packers have enough talent at receiver, or will it be one of the team’s top priorities this offseason?
It will all start with free agency — Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison are both free agents this offseason.
Here’s our offseason review of the wide receiver position:
What’s next for Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison?
One of the biggest questions at the wide receiver position is whether Randall Cobb and Geronimo Allison will be back in 2019. And it could be a decision for head coach Matt LaFleur as much as GM Brian Gutekunst, as LaFleur will have to decide who best fits his offense.
After signing a four-year extension following a 1,000-yard season in 2014, Cobb becomes an unrestricted free agent this offseason. Allison is a restricted free agent. The lowest tender would cost around $2.04 million, according to Over The Cap, which would give the Packers the right of first refusal if Allison signed an offer sheet with another team.
For Cobb, it will come down to the cost and length of the contract, and also whether Gutekunst thinks there are better options in free agency and the draft.
Wide receiver an offseason need
The futures of Cobb and Allison will determine how big of a need the wide receiver position is this offseason. If both return, the Packers may decide to use a mid-round pick on a pass catcher and that be it. Finding a tight end would be a bigger priority.
But if both players walk in free agency, wide receiver will suddenly become a priority for the Packers.
The Packers would be left with Davante Adams, Marquez Valdes-Scantling and Equanimeous St. Brown as the top three receivers. Adams is a star and MVS and EQ have a lot of potential, but the Packers would need to bring in a couple of receivers.
Of course, it’s possible Jake Kumerow or J’Mon Moore will have bigger roles in 2019 (Kumerow is an exclusive-rights free agent).
I expect Allison to return in 2019 with Cobb potentially leaving, and the Green Bay Packers using a mid-round pick to find another slot receiver.
