After a disappointing 2018, the Green Bay Packers begin the offseason in the bottom half of the latest NFL.com power rankings.

After a season to forget, the Packers have a lot of work to do to get back to the playoffs next year. The process began by making big changes to the coaching staff. Matt LaFleur takes over the head coach seat from Mike McCarthy, which is an exciting but risky move.

The Packers needed to make a change, but any time a new head coach is brought in there is some risk that comes with it. But the offense has the potential to return to its best under LaFleur’s leadership very quickly.

After missing the playoffs two seasons in a row, the Packers are nowhere near the top of the power rankings. In the latest rankings for NFL.com by Elliot Harrison, Green Bay comes in at No. 18.

That’s two spots below the Cleveland Browns and just ahead of the New York Giants. That’s the area the Packers are in. They are ranked third among NFC North teams with the Chicago Bears leading the way at No. 9 and the Minnesota Vikings just behind at No. 13.

Green Bay’s ranking could change very quickly if the team makes a strong start to the offseason. Let’s say general manager Brian Gutekunst goes and signs one of the top edge rushers in free agency, and also adds talent at other positions of need. All of a sudden the roster will look much stronger.

If he then makes a couple of strong early-round selections in the draft (well, on paper at least), the Packers will move much closer to the top-10 of the power rankings.

But the Packers will need to go out and prove they are serious contenders in the NFC at the beginning of next season. Until then they have a lot of work to do.
