Packers 2019 draft first-round options: Irv Smith Jr.
Alabama tight end Irv Smith Jr. should be a first-round option for the Green Bay Packers.
A lot has been written about potential first-round targets T.J. Hockenson and Noah Fant, but another tight end for the Green Bay Packers to consider selecting in the early-rounds of the 2019 NFL Draft is Alabama’s Irv Smith Jr.
Smith finished with 710 yards and seven touchdowns last season for Alabama, and he is projected to go in the first round this year in many mock drafts.
With a need at tight end this offseason, there’s a possibility the Packers will look to strengthen the position in the first round. And with two picks on Day 1, Smith could be an option.
Where will Smith be selected in the 2019 NFL Draft?
Many mock drafts have the Alabama tight end being selected either late in the first round or early in the second. NFL media analyst Charley Casserly actually has Smith going to Green Bay at No. 30 in his recent mock draft. Sayre Bedinger of NFL Mocks predicted he’ll be selected at No. 32 by the New England Patriots in his latest mock.
It’s difficult to predict whether Smith will be a first or second-round selection, but there’s a good chance the Packers would either need to select him with the 30th overall pick, or trade down and hope he’s still there early on Day 2.
Smith has the talent to help out the Packers offense right away.
Joe Marino of The Draft Network wrote that “Smith has the ceiling of a high quality starter in the NFL that can lineup anywhere in the formation and make an impact”.
The Packers offense has the potential to bounce back in 2019 with a couple of offseason additions.
They will likely add a tight end at some point, either in free agency or the draft. If he’s still on the board at No. 30 overall, the Packers should consider selecting Smith with their second pick in the opening round.
