It looks like Muhammad Wilkerson could be back with the Green Bay Packers in 2019.

Muhammad Wilkerson was one of the Green Bay Packers‘ big free agency signings a year ago, but he went down with a season-ending injury just three weeks in to the season.

There appears to be a good chance he’ll be back in 2019. According to Rob Demovsky of ESPN, there is “mutual interest” between the Packers and Wilkerson. Wilkerson is set to become a free agent this offseason.

Re-signing the former Pro Bowler makes the most sense. If general manager Brian Gutekunst thought Wilkerson was a good addition to the defense last offseason, why would that be any different now on a similar contract? Wilkerson didn’t get a chance to prove himself.

Last offseason, Wilkerson signed a one-year “prove it” deal. Demovsky noted that a new deal would likely be similar.

The Packers need to add more depth along the defensive line, and bringing back Wilkerson would help. Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels also finished the 2018 season on injured reserve. If Wilkerson re-signs and this trio stays healthy, Green Bay will have a strong starting lineup along the defensive line.

Even if Wilkerson is brought back, I’d still expect the Packers to either sign another free agent defensive lineman or turn to the draft. The more talent Gutekunst can add to Mike Pettine’s defense this offseason, the better.

Gutekunst has a few difficult decisions to make in free agency, but this shouldn’t be one of them. Re-signing Wilkerson makes sense, and with Demovsky reporting that there is mutual interest, there has to be a good chance a deal gets done.

Free agency officially begins on March 13. Will the Packers re-sign any of their free agents before then?
