Round 2, Pick 44: RB David Montgomery, Iowa State

Yes, the Packers have bigger needs at other positions, such as safety. But the draft is about adding talented players, and that’s why David Montgomery would be a good choice at No. 44 overall.

And running back might be higher on the list of priorities for Brian Gutekunst than we might have originally thought. Under Matt LaFleur we can expect the Packers to run the ball more often than they did with Mike McCarthy calling the plays. Also, LaFleur plans to take on a running back-by-committee approach, according to Michael Cohen of The Athletic:

Aaron Jones will play a huge role in this offense next season, but he’s dealt with a few knee injuries over the past two seasons.

A trio of Montgomery, Jones and Jamaal Williams in the backfield would give the Packers talent, and depth, at a key position in LaFleur’s offense.

Lance Zierlein of NFL.com wrote that Montgomery has a “desirable combination of size, vision, toughness and creativity”.

Sounds good to me. Montgomery could very well be the best player on the board when the Packers hit the clock in the second round. While they have other needs, Gutekunst should also look to add talent at running back in the draft. And if Montgomery is there at No. 44, he would be a great choice.

And if Green Bay is able to address a couple of its biggest needs in free agency, Gutekunst will have more flexibility in the draft.
