Green Bay Packers should cast a wide (receiver) net

There’s no doubt the Green Bay Packers have an ultra talented number one receiver in Davante Adams, but the search for a number two receiver could have many potential avenues.

There are potential trades, free agents and draft picks. First, let’s take a look at a potential trade candidate.

A lot of people want to talk about Antonio Brown, and while he would be a very talented addition to the wide receiver room, I’m not so sure Brian Gutekunst would want to put that kind of personality on his first-year head coach.

A player I’m intrigued by is Nelson Agholor from the Philadelphia Eagles. According to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports, the Philadelphia Eagles are open to dealing the 25-year-old receiver.

Agholor has shown a knack for making the big play down the field which is something the Packers could be looking for in their new offense.

A free agent target I like to potentially fill the role as a number two receiver is Donte Moncrief, a former third-round pick out of Ole Miss.

Moncrief is an athletically-gifted receiver, who when healthy has shown an ability to get downfield as well as be a weapon in the red zone. Moncrief also played under new Packers offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett in his lone season with the Jaguars.

Another Ole Miss alum is AJ Brown, who is a prospect I really like from this year’s wide receiver class. To me, Brown is a silky smooth super slot receiver with the ability to play outside and get downfield too.

Check out this article from Stephen White of SB Nation, describing Brown’s ability to be whatever type of receiver the team that drafts him needs. I think Brown would be a perfect fit for the Packers at pick 44 and could quickly become one of quarterback Aaron Rodgers‘ best friends.

The Packers drafted three receivers in last year’s draft, and while they all possess a nice skill set, I feel like they are better suited for the 3-4-5 depth roles. The team needs to find that player that could be a top option if (heaven forbid) Adams is forced to miss games.

The Packers have plenty of options to find a partner in crime for Adams, and they will need to cast a wide (receiver) net to get him.
