Packers: Complete guide to free agency on offense
By Evan Siegel
Here is a complete guide for the Green Bay Packers’ potential targets in free agency.
The Packers, as they do every year, have a very healthy salary cap situation. However, they have continuously saved up their money for the following year’s group of free agents, without ever actually spending it.
The Packers have needs on both sides of the ball (as they seemingly do every single offseason).
On offense, several skill position reinforcements and offensive line help is sorely needed.
Offensive guard
Andy Levitre: The Packers should keep a close eye on the former Bill and Falcon as free agency swirls out of control. Levitre in all likelihood will not be returning to the Falcons, as they are sitting with just $7 million in cap room (according to Over the Cap) and have several other free agents to take care of. The Packers have so many different positions of need that $34 million is actually somewhat of a tight budget.
Adding the veteran guard would be wise for the Packers, who should be on the hunt for a stopgap starter the same way they used Jahri Evans. The rest of the offensive line is mostly in good shape, even with Bryan Bulaga‘s long-term standing with the team in considerable doubt. Adding a veteran guard with Super Bowl experience could go a long way towards rehabbing the team’s makeshift running game.
Roger Saffold: The Packers will have to open up the checkbooks a little bit more to secure Saffold. The Rams may also see him as a larger priority then they did only a week ago, as center Jon Sullivan is on his way out of town. Losing two members of a solid interior offensive line is far from ideal for a team looking to get back to a Super Bowl, but extremely ideal for a team looking for its first appearance in nearly a decade.
Saffold could be signed for the type of contract that would allow the Packers to essentially check off the starting position entirely before the draft. At 31, a deal any longer than three years is pretty risky, but the Packers only have a handful of years left with the greatest talent at the quarterback position in the history of football. It’s time to puff up in Green Bay.
Ramon Foster: Foster has quietly been among the top seven guards in the NFL over the last three seasons. An absolute beast in the running game, the slippery Aaron Jones could find himself some substantially bigger holes in the defense running behind the longtime Steeler.
The difference between him and Saffold is that Foster is two years older, but hasn’t shown any decline in his play to this point. Foster is one of the rare players of his caliber that could very well be available after the first few days of free agency, as only a handful of teams will be willing to pony up significant cash for the 33-year-old.
