Packers: What is the ceiling for Green Bay in 2019?
The Green Bay Packers should be considered Super Bowl contenders in 2019.
It’s not often a team goes two seasons without making the playoffs but can be considered a Super Bowl contender. But that’s where the Green Bay Packers are entering the 2019 season.
Are the Packers favorites to reach the Super Bowl next year? No. Will many people expect them to reach the NFC Championship Game? Or even win the NFC North? Probably not.
But as long as Aaron Rodgers is playing quarterback for the Green Bay Packers, they should be considered Super Bowl contenders.
The Packers have won a championship with Rodgers, and have reached the NFC Championship Game twice in the past five seasons. With a strong offseason, there’s no reason why they won’t reach that stage again, or even go one step further and make the Super Bowl.
Despite all of Mike McCarthy’s success in Green Bay, the team needed to go in a new direction at head coach. Bringing in a new, exciting scheme gives the offense a great opportunity to reestablish itself as one of the best in the league.
Adding talent this offseason will also be key to the team’s success in 2019.
General manager Brian Gutekunst is clearly focused on improving the pass rush, which is key this offseason. Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reported on Saturday that the Packers are interested in trading for Kansas City Chiefs edge rusher Dee Ford, who was franchised-tagged last week.
Even if they don’t make a trade for Ford, the fact Gutekunst is willing to make a big move at the position shows how high it is on his list of priorities.
If the Packers can address their top positions of need — such as edge rusher, safety, tight end and guard — using a combination of both free agency and the draft, it can be considered a successful offseason.
One strong offseason can be all it takes to lift a team back to the playoffs. And if that team has Aaron Rodgers, the Super Bowl is always a possibility.
