The Green Bay Packers won’t be signing Trey Flowers or Landon Collins in free agency.

The free agency negotiation period is underway, and two of the best defensive players are now off the board.

The Green Bay Packers will be searching for help at edge rusher and safety this offseason, but they won’t be signing Trey Flowers or Landon Collins.

The Packers will be playing against Flowers twice a year, though. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Flowers intends to sign with the Detroit Lions. That’s big NFC North news, and it’s not a surprise Lions head coach Matt Patricia had interest in signing a player he knows well from New England. Schefter added it’ll be a five-year contract for Flowers in Detroit.

Schefter also reported that Collins will be signing with the Washington Redskins. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, it’s a six-year deal worth $84 million, with $45 million guaranteed. It’s hard to imagine the Packers would’ve been willing to compete with that.

Flowers was arguably the best edge rusher available. But Rapoport reported that the deal should be worth around $16 million or $17 million per year. That’s a lot of money to pay for an edge rusher who has never hit double-digit sacks in a season.

I wrote on Sunday about the importance of not overspending at edge rusher, so I’m not too disappointed the Packers have missed out. Flowers is a great player and it’s not ideal he’ll be playing in the NFC North, but that’s a lot of money to spend.

As for the safety position, there are still a number of talented players still available, but one has to wonder what the Collins deal means for the other free agent safeties.

I’m sure Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst will be involved in many conversations in the coming days, but it’s important to get the right deal.
