Packers trade up in mock draft following free agency signings
Round 2, Pick 44: Rock Ya-Sin, CB, Temple
Despite using their first two draft picks at the cornerback position a year ago, the Packers shouldn’t rule out using another early selection here. A lot will depend on whether Green Bay re-signs Bashaud Breeland, who is currently a free agent.
Jaire Alexander, Kevin King, Josh Jackson and Tony Brown give the Packers a talented, young group at corner, but without Breeland, depth could become an issue. And with a lot of additions made at edge rusher, the Packers add depth to the secondary by selecting Rock Ya-Sin out of Temple in the second round.
Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com has Ya-Sin as the 28th best player in the class, so he could be an excellent addition to the defense if he’s still available in the second round. Jeremiah wrote that “Ya-Sin has the competitiveness and athleticism to develop into a quality NFL starter”.
With the addition of Ya-Sin in the draft and safety Adrian Amos in free agency, the Packers could have one of the most talented young secondaries in the NFL. And if they re-sign Breeland, the Packers wouldn’t just have talent at cornerback, but also depth.
By selecting Burns and Fant in the first round and Ya-Sin in the second, Green Bay would add three talented players who can all become important contributors in the future.
