Packers mock draft roundup: Ed Oliver an option at No. 12
The latest Green Bay Packers mock draft roundup, now under a month away.
The 2019 NFL Draft begins in under a month. How will the Green Bay Packers plan to improve their roster in the opening round?
In last week’s roundup, many draft analysts had the Packers selecting one of the Iowa tight ends at No. 12. T.J. Hockenson remains a popular choice this week, but another name to watch is defensive lineman Ed Oliver.
Let’s take a look at who some of the top analysts are mocking to the Packers.
Joe Kipp (NFL Spin Zone)
If the draft in April plays out like this mock by Joe Kipp of NFL Spin Zone, Packers fans will have reason to be excited. In the mock, the Packers add two of the best defensive talents in the class, with Houston defensive lineman Ed Oliver and Michigan linebacker Devin Bush.
Oliver could be dominant on the defensive line alongside Kenny Clark and Mike Daniels, and Bush would give the Packers more speed at the linebacker position. With Bush, Blake Martinez and Oren Burks, they’d be well set on the inside.
I’d love the Packers to select one of the top tight ends early, but picking Oliver and Bush in the first round would make for an excellent start to the draft for Green Bay.
Trevor Sikkema (The Draft Network)
Here’s another great first-round pairing for Green Bay. Trevor Sikkema of The Draft Network has the Packers landing tight end T.J. Hockenson from Iowa and Delaware safety Nasir Adderley later in the opening round.
Even after signing Adrian Amos, safety remains a priority in the draft, and Adderley could become a starter in Mike Pettine’s defense quickly.
Lance Zierlein (NFL.com)
Ed Oliver is the pick at No. 12 in the latest mock draft by Lance Zierlein of NFL.com. Zierlein only has one quarterback being selected ahead of Green Bay’s first pick, which is good news as it shows that one of the top prospects is likely to fall to the Packers. In this mock, it’s Oliver, and he’d be a great addition to the defensive line.
Zierlein has Green Bay turning to offense at No. 30 with Mississippi wide receiver A.J. Brown as a replacement for Randall Cobb.
Ryan Wilson (CBS Sports)
The protection up front wasn’t good enough in 2018, and bringing in two players who can help keep Aaron Rodgers upright makes a ton of sense. Ryan Wilson of CBS Sports mocked T.J. Hockenson to Green Bay at No. 12. His work as a blocker would make a him a strong addition to the offense, and that’s before we even talk about his receiving ability.
Wilson then has Green Bay strengthening the offensive line with Dalton Risner out of Kansas State. I like this move because Risner could either be the eventual successor to Bryan Bulaga at right tackle, but can also play inside.
