Packers: Options at cornerback in each round of the draft
By Ojas Kalia
Options the Green Bay Packers have at cornerback in the 2019 NFL Draft following Bashaud Breeland’s departure.
It was a good week while it lasted.
It was seven days free of concern about the secondary and no stress about gaps on the defense. It seemed like the Green Bay Packers would be comfortable to pick up the best player on the board when it came time to send their 12th overall pick down to the podium, maybe Ed Oliver, maybe Jawaan Taylor.
They could then kick their feet up and wait for one of the two Iowa tight ends, maybe Noah Fant, maybe T.J Hockenson, to fall to them at 30, and all would be good in Green Bay.
In a matter of minutes, the trajectory of the draft changed. A week after the official start of the 2019 league year, it was announced that former Packers cornerback Bashaud Breeland signed a one-year, $5 million dollar deal with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Without Breeland, the cornerback room suddenly seems a lot thinner, with concerns about health and development. It seems as if the pressure is back on for the Packers to fill up the newly-dug hole in the secondary.
The remaining cornerback free agent class is quite thin, and with limited cap space to work with, it doesn’t seem likely that the Packers will sign or trade for a cornerback that can resolve the problem immediately anytime soon.
So now, the Packers look towards the draft for a solution. Scroll through to see some of the options the Packers have to try to remediate the cornerback conundrum with their first and second round picks in the 2019 NFL Draft.
