Packers: Safety still a top need with Tramon Williams at cornerback
Safety remains a top need for the Green Bay Packers even after signing Adrian Amos.
Tramon Williams‘ versatility and experience makes him an important part of the Green Bay Packers‘ secondary in 2019.
But according to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com, head coach Matt LaFleur and general manager Brian Gutekunst seem to be in agreement that Williams will play at cornerback this season.
While he could always cover at safety, adding more talent at the position remains one of the top priorities ahead of next month’s draft. Gutekunst made a big signing at safety this month, bringing in Adrian Amos. Amos gives the Packers an immediate upgrade at the position, but it’s unclear who the other starter will be.
Moving Williams back to corner suggests a couple things. One is that both LaFleur and Gutekunst are confident that Raven Greene and Josh Jones can step up. The other is that they know they are very likely to select a safety early in the draft. Maybe both points are true.
Green Bay’s secondary already looks a lot stronger than it did at this time last year. Jaire Alexander put together a strong rookie season at cornerback, and there’s plenty of reason to be excited about the potential of Josh Jackson and Tony Brown. If Kevin King can stay healthy, the Packers will have talented young group of cornerbacks, with Williams offering depth.
The Packers are just a couple of pieces away from completing the rebuild in the defensive backfield. And one of those pieces is finding a long-term starter to play alongside Amos at safety.
In the early rounds of the draft, players like Nasir Adderley and Taylor Rapp come to mind. They could both make an impact early on in Mike Pettine’s defense, making the safety position a strength for Green Bay.
Both Adderley and Rapp could both be available when the Packers hit the clock for the third time with the 44th overall pick.
Another option would be to turn to free agency. Tre Boston is still available, and he’ll only be 27 years old when the new season gets underway.
Whether it’s through free agency or the draft, safety remains a top need for the Green Bay Packers.
