Packers 2019 mock draft: Both sides of the ball addressed in first round
Pick 13: Miami Dolphins
Montez Sweat, EDGE (Miss St.)
I understand they need a quarterback for their future, but I don’t believe Daniel Jones or any other quarterback left in this draft is worth a pick this high. The Dolphins could opt to wait until free agency next season or next year’s draft to get their quarterback of the future.
Instead, they take an extremely athletic edge defender, Montez Sweat. Sweat knocked everyone’s socks off with how well he tested at the NFL combine. He is a lengthy, high-motor player who plays great with his hands. With losing Cameron Wake and Robert Quinn this offseason, they lost 40 percent of their team’s total sack production from 2018. Needless to say, they will need to add edge help in this draft.
Pick 14: Atlanta Falcons
Christian Wilkins, DT (Clemson)
Not only are the Falcons in need of a solid partner next to Grady Jarrett on the interior of their defensive line, but they might need a replacement for Jarrett if he decides to leave Atlanta next season after his franchise tag is up. Wilkins is a huge body with great athleticism. Imagine a front of Tak McKinley, Grady Jarrett, Christian Wilkins, and Vic Beasley. The Falcons will be one dangerous team in the trenches with a defensive front like that.
Pick 15: Washington Redskins
D.K. Metcalf, WR (Ole Miss)
The Redskins are one team in dire need of a quarterback, as Case Keenum isn’t their long-term answer, but like I stated above, Daniel Jones doesn’t look like a first-round quarterback. With a quick look at the Redskins roster, you can see that offensive weapons at wide receiver are certainly needed.
D.K. Metcalf has a ridiculous athletic profile, along with a high potential ceiling. If the Redskins can tap into that potential and fine tune his route-running, Metcalf could be a treacherous receiver to deal with.
Pick 16: Carolina Panthers
Brian Burns, EDGE (Florida St.)
With Julius Peppers retiring, Bruce Irvin aging, as well as Irvin and Mario Addison having contracts up after the 2019 season, the Panthers need edge rushers badly. Brian Burns will be a player that can grow and spend many years in Carolina, as he will only be 21 years old for the entirety of his rookie year. Burns is another edge rusher with a magnificent athletic profile who has the quickness and bend to beat offensive tackles around the edge on a regular basis.
