Round 2, Pick 44: Dalton Risner, T, Kansas State

Adding talent to the offensive line is an absolute must for the Packers in this draft class, and here they don’t wait too long to do just that, selecting Dalton Risner with their first selection on Day 2. And after addressing other positions on the opening day, Green Bay still lands one of the best tackles in the class in the second round.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com has Risner as the 40th best player in the class, fourth among offensive tackles. Jeremiah wrote that “Risner has the tools to become a quality starting right tackle”, which is ideal as Bryan Bulaga enters the final year of his deal. In a perfect world, Risner would offer depth as a backup initially and be ready to take over as a starter in his second season.

But in all likelihood Risner would be called upon at some stage in his rookie year, making this pick all the more important.

The Packers should also look to find upgrades at guard (although signing Billy Turner helps), but they can do so on Day 3. Finding starting-quality tackles isn’t easy, so Gutekunst shouldn’t pass up on the opportunity in the early rounds of the draft.

Factoring in the trade made with Washington, the Packers would pick back-to-back in the third round at No. 75 and No. 76 while still having one selection in the fourth round at No. 114.
