Reviewing the Green Bay Packers’ cornerbacks following the draft.

Key to the success of the Green Bay Packers‘ young secondary is the play of the cornerbacks. After investing two early draft picks at the position a year ago, the hope is that the Packers can continue to improve in the defensive backfield this year.

Are the Packers improved at cornerback following their offseason moves?

Here’s our post-draft review of the cornerback position.

Currently on the roster

Jaire Alexander, Kevin King, Josh Jackson, Tramon Williams, Tony Brown, Ka’Dar Hollman, Natrell Jamerson, Kabion Ento, Javien Hamilton, Will Redmond, Nydair Rouse, Chandon Sullivan

Offseason moves

The notable move in free agency was not re-signing Bashaud Breeland, who played one season for the Packers. Breeland signed with the Kansas City Chiefs, with the Packers turning to the draft to select Ka’Dar Hollman in the sixth round.

Improved from 2018?

The top of the depth chart will remain mostly the same in 2019, except they no longer have Breeland. Despite that, the Packers could still be improved at cornerback this season if Jaire Alexander and Josh Jackson continue to improve in Year 2, Kevin King stays healthy and Ka’Dar Hollman can play some defensive snaps as a rookie.

Key player

Jaire Alexander.

Alexander impressed in Year 1, making the PFWA All-Rookie Team and leading the way for the Green Bay Packers secondary, which was much improved in 2018. If Alexander can build on his rookie season, the Packers could have a star at cornerback.

Position outlook

The Green Bay Packers had real problems at cornerback two years ago, but in just a couple of offseasons, GM Brian Gutekunst looks to have fixed that. Alexander has star potential, and King and Jackson can both be very good. Williams offers experience and Brown also impressed last season.

There will be competition for roster spots at training camp, which is also good news. The Packers have focused on the secondary over the past two offseasons, and even after losing Breeland in free agency, the Packers have depth at cornerback.
