Packers don’t appear to be done at tight end this offseason
The Green Bay Packers don’t appear to be done at the tight end position this offseason.
According to Field Yates of ESPN, the Green Bay Packers were one of five teams to put in a waiver claim for tight end Jordan Leggett, who was released by the New York Jets on Monday.
Why this move, despite being unsuccessful, is interesting is because the Packers already have depth at tight end after using a third-round pick on Jace Sternberger. Add in the fact they decided to keep Jimmy Graham this season and also re-signed Marcedes Lewis and Robert Tonyan.
It’s possible the Packers won’t even want to keep four tight ends on the final 53-man roster in September, but they almost certainly won’t keep five.
The fact they wanted to bring in Leggett could mean a couple of things. The first is that they believe the 24-year-old, who was a fifth-round pick by the Jets just two years ago, has the potential to earn a roster spot with a good performance at training camp. Adding talented players at any position is never a bad thing.
The other possible scenario is that general manager Brian Gutekunst isn’t completely satisfied at the tight end position, despite using a high draft pick. Perhaps he wants to bring in competition for Lewis and Tonyan over training camp.
It’s also possible that Gutekunst viewed Leggett as a player who could contribute in 2020. Graham could be a cut candidate following the 2019 season as he’ll only have one year remaining on his deal, and Lewis will be a free agent when this season comes to an end.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed Leggett as they had the higher waiver claim of the five interested teams, but the Packers’ interest shows they might not yet be done adding to the depth chart at tight end.
