Trevor Davis could be the best choice to return kickoffs and punts for the Green Bay Packers in 2019.

Trevor Davis only played two games for the Green Bay Packers last season, but in that time he showed just how important a role he can play on special teams.

The Packers need to improve on special teams this season, and returning punts is one area in particular they weren’t good enough last year.

Davis led the team in punt return yards, and it wasn’t even close. He averaged 11 yards per return. Second on the team was Tramon Williams, who averaged just 6.9 yards per return. Davis only returned four punts, but his numbers match what he’s achieved throughout his career.

As a team, the Packers finished 22nd in punt return yards last season, and that’s including Davis’ returns. Without him, they’d have finished much lower in the rankings.

Davis is averaging an impressive 12.1 yards on punt returns in his career. If he finished with that number in the 2018 season, it’d have been good for sixth in the NFL.

Davis is averaging 22.6 yards on kickoff returns in his career, and two years ago he finished with 707 yards and a touchdown on kickoffs.

While the Packers would have liked to have seen more from Davis as a wide receiver, his play on special teams could once again earn him a position on the roster.

The Packers do have a few options. Jaire Alexander returned punts in college, but he averaged just 6.3 yards on his four punt returns in his rookie season. But he has the talent to win the job. Another player to watch at training camp is wide receiver Jawill Davis, who returned 12 punts and seven kickoffs for the New York Giants last season.

Trevor Davis will need to stay healthy this year and play well at training camp, but he could be the number one choice to return kicks and punts for the Packers in 2019.
