Packers: Trevor Davis has great opportunity in new offense
Trevor Davis has the opportunity to contribute on offense this season for the Green Bay Packers.
Since being drafted in 2016, Trevor Davis has made some important plays on special teams for the Green Bay Packers.
He’s yet to make a big impact on offense, but could that be about to change?
2018 stats
Due to injury, Davis only played in two games. He finished without a reception and didn’t play an offensive snap, according to Pro Football Reference. Davis did return four punts with an average of 11 yards, and returned one kickoff for 20 yards.
2018 review
Davis missed almost the entire season due to a hamstring injury, but in the games he did play, it was clear he was the Packers’ best returner. Had he been healthy all season, Davis could have contributed in a big way on special teams.
Odds of making roster: 65 percent
Davis might not have a reception since 2017, but he has an opportunity to be part of the Packers offense this season. Head coach Matt LaFleur said that he has “been really impressed with him” this offseason, according to Wes Hodkiewicz of Packers.com.
Hodkiewicz also noted in the article that Davis has “quietly inserted himself” into contention for a chance to earn playing time on offense this season.
There will be a lot of competition when training camp begins next month, but don’t rule out Davis. He will have an opportunity to make the roster, and his ability on special teams will only increase his odds.
What to expect in 2019?
It’s difficult to know what to expect from Davis. There’s no guarantee he’ll even make the 53-man roster, but if he does, he’ll likely play a role on offense and special teams.
Davis would be my number one choice to return punts and kickoffs this year, but it’s also possible he could earn a role as the fourth or fifth wide receiver in LaFleur’s offense.
A new scheme with a different coach creates new opportunities. Davis only had eight catches in three years with Mike McCarthy as head coach. We’ll see whether he gets an opportunity to show what he can do on offense when the regular season gets underway.
