Packers: Power ranking each position group ahead of training camp 2019
6. Running back
The Packers remain mostly the same at running back to last year, but the addition of Dexter Williams gives them more depth, which is important if this offense is to become more balanced in 2019.
The success of Green Bay’s ground game will mostly be determined by the play of Aaron Jones, who has the potential to put up career-best numbers as the number one back in Matt LaFleur’s offense. Despite only being given a limited opportunity by Mike McCarthy last season, Jones still put up 728 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He also had a receiving TD. If he’s given an expanded role by LaFleur, this could be a breakout third season for Jones.
But Green Bay will need all three running backs to contribute. Jamaal Williams could be the go-to running back in short-yardage situations and on the goal line, and he’s also the best pass-protector at RB and offers the most in the receiving game.
Dexter Williams, too, can make an impact in his first season.
It’s going to be interesting to see how LaFleur uses the running backs this year. The Packers have lots of talent and depth at running back, which should lead to success on the ground for this offense.
