Backup quarterback

Participants: DeShone Kizer, Tim Boyle, Manny Wilkins

One question to answer is how many quarterbacks the Green Bay Packers will even keep on the roster. This factors into the decision making as it’s possible they could decide to keep three QBs, which could then change their decision as to who is the number two behind Aaron Rodgers.

In this scenario, we’re going to assume the Packers only keep two quarterbacks on the initial 53-man roster.

The candidates for the backup QB position are DeShone Kizer, Tim Boyle and rookie Manny Wilkins. Wilkins’ most realistic chance of making the roster is likely if the team keeps three QBs, so the battle for the backup job will come down to Kizer and Boyle.

Kizer may have struggled in his two regular season appearances last year, but it’s fair to say Boyle would have also struggled in the same situation, twice having to come off the bench. One of those games was also up against an elite Chicago Bears defense.

Kizer’s regular season record isn’t great either with the Packers or the Cleveland Browns, but he’s still just 23 years old and was selected in the second round two years ago for a reason. Not only that, Kizer is the most talented quarterback of this group, and that’s why he’ll win the job.

Prediction: Kizer wins the job
